🟨 FINRA to Pilot Adaptive Testing for Select Exams
Smarter, shorter, and more personalized testing may be on the way.
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has announced plans to pilot adaptive testing for select qualification exams, marking a significant shift in how financial professionals may be assessed in the future. This move aims to improve testing efficiency, enhance exam security, and provide a more accurate measure of candidate competence.
🔍 What Is Adaptive Testing?
Adaptive testing adjusts the difficulty of questions in real-time based on a candidate’s performance.
- Answer a question correctly? The next one may be harder.
- Miss a question? The next might be slightly easier.
This approach results in fewer questions, but more targeted assessment, allowing the system to zero in on your true ability level faster.
🧪 What FINRA Exams Are Being Considered?
While the specific exams haven’t been officially confirmed, pilot programs are expected to target lower-stakes or high-volume exams first, such as:
- SIE (Securities Industry Essentials)
- Series 6
- Series 63 or 66
Higher-level exams like the Series 7 or Series 24 may follow based on pilot results and exam structure feasibility.
⏱ Why Adaptive Testing?
- Shorter exams without sacrificing reliability
- Faster scoring and more accurate results
- Reduces overexposure of test questions (enhances security)
- Provides a customized test experience for each candidate
📆 When Will the Pilot Begin?
FINRA has not released a public timeline yet, but internal planning and consultation with NASAA and Prometric suggest the earliest rollout could begin in late 2025 or 2026. Test-takers will be informed well in advance if adaptive formats will be used.
📌 What It Means for Candidates
- Study methods will remain the same—the content doesn’t change
- But test-taking strategies may shift: no skipping, no going back
- You’ll likely see fewer total questions, but with more variable difficulty
