📘 How Is the Series 7 Exam Scored?
The Series 7 exam, also known as the General Securities Representative Exam, is scored based on the number of correct answers you provide. Here’s an overview of how the scoring works:
🔑 Scoring Overview
- Total Questions:
- The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions.
- 10 of these questions are unscored, pretest questions used by FINRA for future exam development. These questions are randomly distributed and do not count toward your final score.
- Therefore, the scored questions total 115.
- Passing Score:
- A passing score for the Series 7 exam is 72%.
- This means you need to correctly answer at least 84 out of the 115 scored questions (approximately 84 correct answers).
- Scoring Method:
- The Series 7 exam is a computer-based exam administered by FINRA at Pearson VUE test centers.
- Your score is based on how many correct answers you get out of the 115 scored questions.
- The final score is reported immediately upon completion of the exam.
- The 10 Pretest Questions:
- These are not scored, so they do not affect your pass/fail result. They are included to help FINRA assess future questions for the exam.
- However, it’s important to treat every question seriously since you won’t know which ones are pretest questions.
📊 Scoring Breakdown:
The Series 7 exam is divided into different content areas, each with a specific weight. The scoring takes into account how well you perform across each of these areas, but only the total number of correct answers out of the scored questions contributes to your final score.
Content Areas:
- Seeks to secure a client’s financial needs through the sale of products (such as stocks, bonds, options, etc.).
- Understanding the regulatory framework and responsibilities.
- Customer account activities, such as purchases, sales, margin accounts, etc.
- Securities products and their risks.
🎯 Final Thoughts:
- A passing score of 72% means you must answer at least 84 out of 115 scored questions correctly.
- You will know your score immediately after completing the exam.
- The 10 pretest questions do not affect your score, so focus on each question as if it counts.
