Once you pass a FINRA licensing exam—such as the SIE, Series 6, Series 7, Series 63, or Series 65—it’s important to understand how long your license remains valid and what can cause it to expire. Here’s a clear breakdown of FINRA license validity and renewal rules.

⏳ License Validity Depends on Activity

Most FINRA licenses remain active indefinitely as long as:

✅ You are registered with a FINRA member firm, and
✅ You stay current on continuing education (CE) requirements

If you leave your firm or are terminated, the clock starts ticking.

⌛ What Happens If You Leave the Industry?

• You have a 2-year window (24 months) to become re-registered with a FINRA member firm.
• After 2 years of inactivity, your license expires, and you must retake the exam to regain it.
• This applies to most exams, including Series 6, 7, 63, 65, and 66.

📌 The SIE Exam is an exception—it remains valid for 4 years, even without firm sponsorship.
