📅 FINRA Licenses Don’t Expire — But They Can Be Terminated
Technically, a FINRA license (like Series 6, 7, or 24) does not expire while you’re actively registered with a FINRA-member firm. However, if your registration is terminated, the license can become inactive and eventually expire based on the following timeline.
⏳ Key Rule: The Two-Year Window
- If you leave a firm or your registration is terminated, you have two years to become registered with another FINRA-member firm.
- After two years of inactivity, your license expires, and you’ll need to retake the exam to regain registration.
📃 What Happens During the 2-Year Period?
- Your record is stored in CRD (Central Registration Depository)
- You’re considered “unregistered” but not expired
- You may rejoin a firm and reactivate your license without retesting if it’s within the 2-year window
🔄 How to Keep Your License Active
- Stay continuously employed by a registered broker-dealer or investment adviser firm
- File Form U4 when switching firms to maintain continuity
- Complete any required Continuing Education (CE)
🧾 Continuing Education Requirements
- Regulatory Element: Required annually for most registered individuals
- Firm Element: Ongoing firm-specific training requirements
Failing to complete CE can result in inactive status, even if you’re still employed.
