🔁 How Often Can You Retake the SIE Exam?
The Securities Industry Essentials® (SIE®) Exam is designed to test your foundational knowledge of the securities industry — and if you don’t pass on your first try, you’re allowed to retake it. However, FINRA enforces mandatory waiting periods between attempts to ensure adequate preparation.
Here’s how often you can retake the SIE and what you need to know before scheduling your next attempt.
📅 SIE Exam Retake Policy
⏱️ 1st and 2nd Failed Attempts:
- You must wait 30 calendar days before retaking the exam.
⏱️ 3rd Failed Attempt (and beyond):
- You must wait 180 calendar days (6 months) before taking the SIE again.
These waiting periods are non-negotiable and are enforced across all FINRA exams.
💵 Exam Fee on Retake
Each retake requires a new registration and payment of the exam fee:
- SIE Exam Fee: $80 (each attempt)
Even if you’re sponsored by a firm, confirm whether they’ll cover the cost for retakes.
📊 No Lifetime Limit
There is no limit to the number of times you can take the SIE exam over your lifetime — but repeated failures will cost you time and money, and may raise concerns with employers.
🧠 Smart Strategy for Retakes
- Use your score report to identify weak topics
- Focus on mock exams and scenario-based questions
- Aim for consistent 80%+ on full-length practice tests before your next attempt
- Don’t rush — give yourself a 2–4 week review plan if needed
🚀 Get Back on Track
Don’t let a single setback define your path. The SIE is passable with the right tools and focus.
