🟨 Is Sponsorship Required for the Series 66 Exam?
Here’s what you need to know before registering.
Unlike many FINRA-administered exams, the Series 66—also known as the Uniform Combined State Law Exam—has unique sponsorship rules that make it more accessible to some candidates and more restrictive for others.
âś… Short Answer: No, firm sponsorship is not required
However, there’s an important condition:
You must have already passed (or be registered to take) the Series 7 exam.
đź“‹ Series 66 Sponsorship Details
Requirement | Series 66 | Series 7 |
---|---|---|
Firm Sponsorship | ❌ Not required | ✅ Required |
Can You Self-Enroll? | ✅ Yes, via FINRA’s Form U10 | ❌ No |
Must Take With Another Exam? | ✅ Yes – only valid with Series 7 | ❌ No |
So while you don’t need a firm to sponsor you, you can’t use the Series 66 alone—it only qualifies you as an investment adviser representative and securities agent when paired with Series 7.
🧾 How to Register Without Sponsorship
If you’re not affiliated with a broker-dealer or firm, follow these steps:
- Create an account on FINRA’s Test Enrollment Services System (TESS)
- Fill out Form U10
- Pay the exam fee ($187)
- Schedule your exam at a Prometric testing center or online
🎓 Ideal for:
- Career changers preparing independently
- Students planning to join a firm after licensing
- Advisors who already passed the Series 7 but want state-level registration
🎯 Pro Tip
Don’t take the Series 66 before passing Series 7—it won’t count toward registration until both are passed.
