🎓 Your Next Steps After Passing the SIE Exam
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam is the first step toward a career in the securities industry. If you’ve passed the SIE, you’ve completed an important milestone, but there are further steps you need to take depending on your career goals. Here’s what comes next after passing the SIE exam.
🎯 What Is the SIE Exam?
The SIE exam is a foundational exam administered by FINRA that assesses your basic knowledge of the securities industry. It covers topics such as:
- Types of securities products
- Market participants and regulations
- Economic factors
- Understanding of ethics and professionalism in securities sales
While the SIE exam is an essential step, it does not allow you to engage in securities transactions. For that, you’ll need additional qualifications.
🏆 What to Do After Passing the SIE Exam?
After you’ve passed the SIE exam, here are the next steps you need to take:
1. Obtain Sponsorship from a FINRA Member Firm
- To take more advanced licensing exams (such as Series 6, 7, or 63), you must be sponsored by a FINRA-member firm.
- This means you’ll need to secure a job with a broker-dealer or investment firm that is willing to sponsor you to take further exams.
- Your sponsorship allows you to register for the required qualifying exams that will enable you to sell securities and provide investment advice.
2. Choose Your Path and Take Additional Exams
Once you’re sponsored, your next steps depend on the career role you want to pursue. Here are a few common paths:
- Series 6: If you want to sell mutual funds, variable annuities, or other investment products, you’ll need to take the Series 6 exam.
- Series 7: For those who want to sell a broader range of securities, such as stocks, bonds, and options, the Series 7 exam is required. This is often paired with the Series 63 or Series 66 exams for state-level registration.
- Series 63: Required for individuals who want to act as securities agents in most states. This is often paired with the Series 6 or Series 7 exam.
- Series 65: If you wish to become an investment adviser and provide fee-based financial advice, you’ll need to take the Series 65 exam. This exam qualifies you as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA).
🚀 Gain Experience in the Industry
While you prepare for your additional exams, you can start gaining experience in the financial services industry:
- Work under a FINRA-member firm: While you’re waiting to take your next exam, you can begin working as a trainee or entry-level associate at a firm that sponsors you.
- Learn about the products and services your firm offers and start building relationships with clients.
- Develop your skills in customer service, sales, and market analysis.
🧑‍🏫 Get Ready for Career Advancement
Passing the SIE is just the beginning of your career in finance. By taking additional exams and working your way through licensing requirements, you’ll gain professional credibility and increase your career opportunities.
With your SIE foundation, you’ll be on the path to becoming a fully licensed financial professional capable of selling a wide range of investment products and providing essential financial advice.
