π What NASAA Requires for Series 63 Registration
The Series 63, or Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam, is required by most U.S. states for individuals who want to solicit or sell securities within a state. The exam is administered by FINRA but developed and governed by NASAA (North American Securities Administrators Association).
Hereβs exactly what NASAA requires for you to register and work with a Series 63:
β 1. Pass the Series 63 Exam
- You must earn a score of 72% or higher (out of 60 scored questions)
- The test covers state securities regulations, business practices, and ethics
- Time allotted: 75 minutes
π§Ύ 2. Sponsorship or Open Enrollment
There are two paths to take the exam:
- With Sponsorship: Your FINRA-member firm files Form U4 through the Central Registration Depository (CRD).
- Without Sponsorship: You can enroll as an individual using FINRAβs Test Enrollment Services System (TESS).
In both cases, the exam is taken through Prometric testing centers.
ποΈ 3. State Registration
Passing the Series 63 alone does not authorize you to conduct business. You must also:
- Register with each individual state where you intend to do business
- File through the CRD system or have your firm do so
- In some states, pay state registration fees or file additional disclosures (like fingerprinting)
π 4. Pair With a FINRA Qualification Exam
The Series 63 does not authorize securities sales by itself. It must be paired with a qualifying FINRA license, such as:
- β Series 6 β for mutual funds and variable contracts
- β Series 7 β for full-service securities sales
- β Other top-off exams, depending on your role
π§ 5. Stay in Good Standing
Once registered, you are expected to:
- Adhere to state and federal securities laws
- Maintain firm supervision under a registered principal
- Meet continuing education requirements (Firm Element & Regulatory Element) if applicable
