Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time and Independent Candidates
The Series 63, officially the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam, is a requirement in most U.S. states for individuals seeking to become licensed securities agents. Administered by FINRA on behalf of NASAA, the exam ensures that candidates understand state securities regulations and ethical practices.
โ Step 1: Determine Your Registration Path
- If you are employed by a FINRA-member firm:
Your firm must file a Form U4 (Uniform Application for Securities Industry Registration or Transfer) through FINRA’s Central Registration Depository (CRD) system to request the Series 63 exam on your behalf. - If you are not associated with a FINRA-member firm:
You can self-enroll for the Series 63 exam via FINRA’s Test Enrollment Services System (TESS).
๐ณ Step 2: Pay the Exam Fee
- The Series 63 exam fee is $147. Payment is required at the time of enrollment.
๐ Step 3: Schedule Your Exam
- After enrollment, you will receive a 120-day window to schedule and take the exam.
- Exams are administered by Prometric. You can schedule your exam at a Prometric test center.
- Note: As of June 9, 2023, online appointments for the Series 63 exam are only available to candidates with approved accommodations.
๐ง Step 4: Prepare for the Exam

๐ Additional Information
- Retake Policy: If you fail the exam, you must wait 30 days before retaking it. After a third failed attempt, the waiting period increases to 180 days.
